Mindspeak Volume 1 Heather Sunseri 9780988715332 Books

This book took FOREVER to reveal any kind of interesting plot. Lexi attends an elite private school where her real identity is kept secret. She thinks it's to protect her father, a brilliant geneticist, but it's for her own protection. Her love interest, Jack, is a new student who is interested in getting to know her better. Somehow he knows more about Lexi's true identity than she does. But it takes 3/4 of the book for him to reveal it to her. I skipped many pages of ridiculous dialogue to find out what he knows.

I read lots of teen fiction books. This one was slow with underdeveloped characters. The end of Mindspeak leaves the reader hanging, but it was so slow I don't want to waste money or time on the second book. I do not recommend this book. It was slow with cheesy dialogue.

Mindspeak Volume 1 Heather Sunseri 9780988715332 Books Reviews

I must say as a teen/young adult writer myself, I thought that Heather Sunseri did a very nice job with this text. The subject matter brings about much interest and what are the possibilities of our future. Will man our couples want to genetically engineer their children to be smarter, faster, able to heal or cure anyone from terrible ills or accidents. Her lead character Lexi, I thought was well developed. Once her father left the picture she wanted to find out who and what she is. Lexi struggles with the thought that the boy she loves has been watching her for some time. Together Jack reveals to Lexi's the true story behind her abilities.

I thought the author did a great job developing each individuals (Jack and Lexi's three friends) personality, their concern for Lexi. However, there were times, especially in the middle where the story slowed down considerably, and where I felt it was repeating the same thoughts from earlier.

For the most part I did like the book. I think the age group is perfect for Teen/YA.
This author is way under-rated. The book was interesting and well-written for the most part. A lot better than some of the YA books I've read lately. Only time will tell if this series will shine, but the first book was great. I felt like it was a new take on an old idea. This is what I felt like 'Allegiant' should have been - gene manipulation - except the focus stayed on the characters like it should. If this book doesn't get huge soon, I will be surprised.
Based on the book synopsis, I knew going in there was a good chance this book would not be written at a level that would hold an adult's interest, so I'm not taking away stars for that. However I do want to warn adults away from this series. It is for young teens at best.

Most of the time, the writer is very good at creating dialogue that flows naturally and follows a logical path. The characters were well developed. It's also very refreshing to find an author who isn't afraid of the PC crowd and will still include belief in God as a valid characteristic in a person's, especially a young person's, life base. Thanks you for the courage it took to do that!

What I did take away stars for was the constant creation of ridiculous scenarios that intentionally left characters (other than the lead, Lexi) shrouded in mystery and suspicion. Sorry, but it was used way too much. I never did figure out why that was done, unless it was in an attempt to build excitement, which it did not (in me) - rather mostly frustration. Maybe it would work for young teens. The never-ending 'discoveries' got tiresome and most of the time little or next to nothing new was discovered which made the story line drag along somewhat. I've never read any of the Harry Potter books or seen any of the movies (I've only seen the movie trailers) but I get the feeling this author might have been trying too hard to copy that successful book/movie series. You Harry Potter fans out there will have to tell me if I'm right or wrong.

Also, the ending was weak and simply leads into the next book. Not a fan of never-ending book series. A book should have a strong ending. If it's good - we'll definitely buy the next one.
I really had hopes that this book would get better. The premise is fun and I actually liked the characters, but the writing lagged in spots and while the author kept secrets from the reader and main character, she didn’t distract us enough with other things. I don’t mind being in the dark if there’s so many other things going on that I know there hasn’t been time for explanations. If there are big spaces of time where the main character could have gone after the answers, I lose patience and belief in her. If she doesn’t care about getting answers, why should I?! Lost was a great TV show because, while the writers didn’t give you the BIG answer(s) to the show, they either gave you hints that helped ease the curiosity for one more week, or they gave partial answers that left you with more questions. THAT was good mystery writing. Mindspeak was more like a few big questions that hardly get answered and left me with an annoying (and not in an enticing way) cliffhangar that does not make me really want to keep going because I’ve my patience for finding out and I’m not sure I’ll even get answers in the next book.

The only reason this one gets 3 stars instead of 2 was because I liked the characters and the basic premise. The execution was it’s flaw.
The romance in this book sucked I got about 40% into the book and that was trying hard I normally finish books even if they are pretty terrible.I also don't write reviews but I want to save you the trouble. Every time you were going to get answers she walked off randomly or he said not right now. He seemed to just be playing games with her and the book felt so incredibly slow. Among a few other things. I would not recommend this book.
