If you are over the fact that life is about to change in a radical way, and you are interested in getting ahead of the curve, this book will guide you. It covers many of the basics, offering levels of exploration for the beginner. But it walks the user from the starter position on through to very specific advanced examples, explaining why along the way. While all books are just theory, even practical manuals, some do better than others. This, from my own experience in setting up for the changes promised, is as close as I could request to being utilitarian without being impossible to read. All that is required beyond the book is following the suggestions, customizing to your specific skills, finances, and place in life. It wasn't a forced read, and I am not easy to please as a reader.I did read the book with an eye toward arguing, debating, disproving. It's how I do things. Of the various books on the topic I have read, or tried to read, I just couldn't get my mind to tear the ideas apart with this one. So many books are built on a premise I don't agree with, or try to funnel me to a place I don't, can't, or won't go. This book was just the facts. I may disagree with some of the theory, if I won't disagree that my theories are just as questionable. No theory will quite cover the why of things, even after it happens. People will be arguing about the why until the world rights itself, if that remains an option. Actually, I even enjoyed the parts I debated. The ideas offered were offered well enough that it was good fat to chew. Given what was given, I might even suggest, begrudgingly a bit, that his ideas are probably better thought out. Correct? We'll see. On the practical, and the majority of theory, this book is just worth reading.
I will add, I wish I had found such a straightforward book to read when I was starting out. I have made any number of 'freshman' errors that this book might have helped me avoid. Or, if I had ignored, or gone my own way, would have allowed a reasonable way back. With the source being a book, there is no need to save face and have someone telling me they told me so. You will make mistakes. But a decent resource will allow you to recover more quickly, giving you food for thought as to better ways. What is suggested in this book isn't a cookie cutter path, it's a new way to look at, and lead, life. Becoming self-sufficient, local, and survivable even thrivable, isn't something you do, more something you become. Slower, harder, more expensive in the modern sense of things. If you believe the world will continue as you know it, you won't read this book. If you do, understand, it's a lifestyle, not a few purchases and a group of little static changes.

The SHTF Stockpile What you need on hand before it hits the fan edition by Bill Hoyt Politics Social Sciences eBooks Reviews
The entire book is just list after list with much emphasis on guns and ammunition. There are no explanations on how to accomplish goals, just many lists in paragraph form. He throws his religious beliefs in there too and advises kids to read Narnia and Nancy Drew instead of Harry Potter. That was unnecessary. The lists were good but the book was rambling and a weary read.
This is a practical prepper book! Does not go to extremes with hoarding foods that taste awful, but leans much more to a sustainable way of life. This is how my wife and I are doing it . Self-sufficiency is a lifestyle. Is it easy? Of course not, but the rewards are huge. If you are interested in a sustainable way if life, read Grit, Mother Earth News, etc. And your chances of survival during the forthcoming economic collapse will increase exponentially. Great read!
AWESOME PRODUCT AND SERVICE
Thoughtful, well written, with a refreshingly realistic perspective on what is really important.
An important aspect of this book is that author Bill Hoyt believes that someone who chooses to be a prepper should be an optimist. Most folks view preppers as pessimists, people who are counting down the days until TEOTWAWKI. For me, I always believed that one should prepare for having children (though that is really being optimistic), prepare for retirement, and also be ready for those "rainy days." I would consider when SHTF to be a very rainy day.
Mr. Hoyt recognizes that even if you have a year's worth of food, there will be nothing to eat on that 366th day. He correctly points out that in the not-so-distant past, almost everyone concentrated on growing food to survive, and that will be important to survive if those difficult days come to pass. He believes people should be getting their skills and tools together so that they will not only have food, but also a skill to make something that others could use...in other words, handcrafted items that can be traded.
This is not a book of lists of things to buy. While the author does make suggestions (and will be stronger about suggesting some things over others), he also gives suggestions of what you could do if the world happens to suddenly lurch in a strange direction.
I am extremely optimistic, and believe that the end of the world as we know it is not about to happen. However, I do consider that there may be a monetary collapse similar to the Great Depression and I also know that one day I will want to retire. Like most people, I will probably need to save a buck whenever possible. Whether I put Mr. Hoyt's ideas toward everyday survival or just making retirement a bit easier, his basic advice can be applied in either direction. In a nutshell, there is something for most people in this book. The author doesn't waste words, and thus won't waste your time, either. Five stars.
This man really makes you think about the future! Wonderfully written, precise information most prepper books don't mention. I'm all for the food and TP preps but have alternatives already planned and purchased. This is a great intermediate prepper book for after "I bought the food and TP now what crowd,"
This book has a different focus. Instead of stockpiling food, toilet paper, and water, stockpile things that will help you grow food and sanitize water. Book was very eye opening.
