I can't not believe there is a Janet Chapman book that I don't love but The Highlander Next Door is it. I am so disappointed in this book. Her books are mostly romance and the Hero is a Hero. This book not so much. There was very little romance between Niall and Birch and I really never did like Birch. She was such a bitch to everybody mostly Niall and when she finally decided she wanted to sleep with him there was nothing romantic at all about it. She walked in and got into his bed. There were too many secondary characters in this book to keep up with. If you have never read any of her other highlander books then you will be confused at who is who. The fight scene at the compound with all the men didn't make any sense to me other than to add some magic and lightening to the story. Even the story line with Birch being the director of the women's shelter was scattered.

If you want to read some really good Janet Chapman check out her original highlander series staring with Charming The Highlander. Fantastic book.

I've said it before but it's definitely true. Janet Chapman writes about the magic of love. Sure her stories have more than a little of magic of other kinds around but there is just something special in each of her books. The Highlander Next Door isn't always the perfect book but it leaves the reader with a warmth and the belief that love is waiting for us. That you just need to believe and it will come. Of course Spellbound Falls very existence is based on an act of love so huge, so mythical that it moved mountains (literally). So the people understand the importance of true love. Even though most of them aren't aware of the magic that runs deep in their little slice of Maine.

Birch Callahan stopped believing in happily ever after sometime around the age of 6... A child of a teenage mésalliance Birch has watched her mother marry unsuitable sleaze after unsuitable sleaze and her father never really love at all. She wants to believe in something more but with her observations it's hard. In fact she moved to Spellbound falls just to get her mother away from her latest sleaze. Even went as far as to tell her mother that it was against the law to marry more than four times in America (totally made me grin). She is convinced that this time she can protect her mother. Now all she has to worry about is protecting herself from the sexy sheriff next door.

Niall MacKeage accepted Oceanuses offer to travel forwards in time and attempt to win his daughter's hand in marriage. That didn't work out so well BUT he liked it in this time and decided to stay. Offered the position of Sherriff, Niall is determined to fit in. Except he also refuses to arrest someone just because his wife's ticked at him. Now how does he explain to Birch that he's not a woman hater and he believes in protecting them? And if at all possible how can he convince her to look his way?

Birch and Niall may be on opposite sides of how they go about serving the community and providing shelter and protection for abused women but they both believe in the cause. So gradually they let down their fences and become a bit more neighborly. Attraction is sparking but a newly minted god and a con family from Canada have other plans.

Will the danger surrounding Spellbound Falls break them apart or bring them together?

A sweet and charming read. Worth the time.. and yes it reminds us all that love abounds!

I have read all the Spellbound Falls books and it never ceases to amaze me how desperate I am to read the next one. Every Time! I read a lot of series books and, as a rule, they're books that can be read separately. The Spellbound Falls books can be also but, it's just not the same. There is something about these men that leaves me panting for more of them and the next man's story. Don't get me wrong, I love the women in the books too, but, these men, these gods and demi-gods and time-travelers are absolutely fascinating and utterly unforgettable! This book is about a time-traveler named Niall, who moves to town next door to a woman who opens a woman's shelter. They fall in love and deal with the problems they both have and it's an I don't want to put it down EVER kind of book! You'll love it!
Birch Callahan has witnessed her mother's four marriages and doesn't want anything to do with a man. She runs a women's shelter.
She can't figure out her new neighbor, Niall MacKeage. He's the chief of police of Spellbound Falls. He's insightful, compassionate, and sexy. She's also falling for him and he acts like someone from the twelfth century.

Niall knows Birch is attracted to him even though she distrusts men. He also knows she has a secret---something that drives her to place herself in danger for the women of the shelter.
Niall would rush to Birch's side to protect her from harm, but their secrets stand between them. If he wants to keep her, he'll have to reveal his own secret. Great story.

This review is my honest opinion and I have fully read this book.

I love Janet Chapman and all of her series. Some of her books are 5 out of 5 and then others are 4 out of 5. This one is 4 out of 5. I liked this one but I didn't LOVE it.
Usually I can fall into one of her books and fall in love with all the characters. In this book her main character Birch was kind of annoying. I felt that she really stuck her foot in a lot of things she should have not done or if she did do she should really be smart about how she did it.
I really had a problem with how Birch was in this book. I rolled my eyes when she did need Chief Niall had to rescue her. Because again she was not being smart. In real life she could have been killed because she was stupid on how to go about doing things.
What did redeem the book for me were the other characters in this book. Chief Niall was great as well as his First officer. I also can't wait to read more of her books about the newest god. It was also great to see new faces as well as some of the old faces in here.
Over all I did like the read and still love Janet Chapman and can't wait for her other books.
