Ok, I won't lie. I loved the book until about the last 7%.The fantastic- Sean. I mean, you get to go through his life and you've watched him be the tortured soul through all of the other stories...and now he's putting it together and making it right. There's a few scenes (one involving the graveyard) that made me cry with him, I could feel his pain. He lost his children, his wife.
The good- Eve. I got that she loved him. I get that she's a good firefighter. But there's not a lot to her. Her character didn't feel fleshed out. In this series, most of the women are very well written with a lot of depth. But Eve felt flat. I really ended the story knowing very little about her. She has a mom and she loves Sean and always has. I wanted the meat and potatoes of her...and I didn't get it.
The decent- The bad guy. I actually felt more of a connection with him than with Eve. Sadness, isn't it? A lot of flashbacks, and I almost learned as much about his character...I felt where he was coming from.
The sexy...is still there. Another reviewer was knocking the crisco scene. LOL. I'll just say you take a lot of what happens with a grain of salt. And besides...he'd had a dry spell for 2 years.
****SPOILER ALERT****
The annoying AND JUST OUTRIGHT RIDICULOUS! Really...helpless victim. From a woman that can "fireman carry a 225 pound man"? Did you really need to go back in at the end without the cops. And how the heck do you "sneak off" after a terrorist threat in your town. I want to see that nonsense happen. Like you wouldn't be watched like a hawk. PLEASE. And to go alone...annoying
Great book though, and the series so far, a 4
I'm still waiting on Clay's story...and you know the cops of Sugarland are coming! They HAVE to be;)

Ride the Fire The Firefighters of Station Five Jo Davis 9780451231796 Books Reviews
Would by again from . They product is always as advertised, packaged and mailed on time. I have bought many products from with no problems.
Jo Davis please keep writing about these hot firemen and their loves. I can't get enough of these books. Keep them coming!
HEA, standalone, but you'll want to read all of them in order to understand the players who are reoccurring. A+++++++
Let's just say that after the long wait for this story, it was a let-down. I liked the preview of Sean and Eve given to us in previous stories but their main story just didn't work for me. Sean's manner of speaking was too "he-man" for me and Eve was too much of a door mat. She did get spunky now and then but she caved to Sean even when he was cruel. I think if I hadn't had different expectation of Sean, I may have enjoyed the book more.
I am looking forward to the next Station Five story, I am thinking it's Clay's. Hopefully he will be brighter in his story than he has appeared in these last few.
I loved the first and last book of this Series the best. The ones in the middle were pretty good. Often Romantic-suspense is more suspense than romance. This series was a good balance. I would read more by this author. Note series should be read in order.
STORY BRIEF
Sean is a firefighter. His wife wanted him to attend his son's football game, but Sean worked instead of taking off. After the game, his wife, son, and daughter died in a car accident. Due to grief and guilt for not being there, Sean drank too much, was negligent at work causing injury to another, and went into rehab. It's now two years after the accident, and Sean is back at work. He no longer touches alcohol.
Eve works in Sean's group as a firefighter. She and Sean are attracted to each other and act on it. He feels guilty being happy. He fears being hurt if he has another relationship. They both are concerned about what to do at work since he is her boss.
A killer wants to hurt Sean. Threats, damages, and harm to others are happening. Throughout the book there are flashbacks to about twenty years earlier showing Sean and his best friend Jesse in the military.
REVIEWER'S OPINION
This was a 4-star story until the last 40 pages or so. Then stupidity ruined it.
The Good
It's a good romantic suspense story - very complete regarding plot and motives. The sex scenes were good. I enjoyed his take-charge in the bedroom. My thoughts during those scenes were good, hot, passionate, loved it. There is one scene with rear door activity.
Both Sean and Eve are likeable and enjoyable to read about. Sean is handsome, intelligent, competent, and courageous in saving lives. Eve is loving, loyal, and willing to forgive when he hurts her due to his psychological wounds. Eve's mother is black, her father white. She has dark skin and blue eyes. They have a neat relationship.
The Bad
Unfortunately the good guys did stupid things. Sean and the police knew a killer was after him, yet he continued to go places and do things without a weapon or police protection. Of course he was attacked. Then he was hurting and went to bed. Eve needed to buy some Tylenol for him. She didn't know the password for his home security system, and she didn't want to wake him to ask. So she turned off the system thinking she would only be gone for twenty minutes. Of course something bad happened. But the worst stupidity was at the end which made me furious. It's in the Spoiler below.
The Flashbacks
I usually don't like flashbacks because I feel both the current and past stories are being interrupted. But the flashbacks in this book didn't bother me. Each flashback was short which was good. Also, not knowing the full flashback story kept the bad guy's motives and identity hidden until toward the end - which was good.
OTHER BOOKS
I've reviewed the following Jo Davis books.
4 stars. When Alex Was Bad. Lots of erotic sex including MM. Pretty good mystery suspense.
3 ½ stars. Trial by Fire (Firefighter series #1). Pretty good but too much helpless victim theme.
3 stars. Ride the Fire (Firefighter series #5). Above average but stupidity at the end.
3 stars. I Spy a Wicked Sin. Lots of erotic sex but not enough emotional connection or relationship development.
DATA

CAUTION SPOILER
I usually shake my head at stupidity for the sake of the plot, but this was so bad I was insulted. Bad guys kidnap Sean and Eve, tie their hands and feet, and put them in a sewage tunnel under the street. Explosives are also there, ready to blow. Bad guy says he will return shortly. They get untied. Sean tells Eve to go and get help. He will stay to dismantle the explosives. She leaves and brings back police who are standing around deciding what to do. She then goes into the tunnel alone, with no weapon, to help Sean. The bad guy grabs her and holds a gun to her head. Why didn't she take the police with her? Why didn't she send the police down to help Sean?
Love these characters and seeing then grow and Change with the challenges they face. Never a dull moment and Jo Davis keeps it's exciting!
