All I Want For Christmas Is You A Coming Home Novella Jessica Scott 9781942102014 Books
I had previously read one of the author's non-fiction books, and I wanted to like this one.It just didn't work for me, however. I am a military member, and I was hoping that this would be a romance novel I could connect with. Plus, looking at the problems that mothers have when they come home from deployment is an interest of mine.
The biggest problem is that it's just very Lifetime movie-of-the-week, and knowing how things are supposed to work in the military made it hard for me to buy some of the plot elements. This might not be an issue for non-military people.

1. I didn't buy that they've been together for 8-9 years and aren't married, and the 8-9 year old doesn't know it. Kids are inquisitive about stuff like that, especially fun questions like "why do Mommy and Daddy have different last names?" Also, it's hard enough for married couples to stay together in the Army, much less an unmarried couple (speaking from personal experience). I will note that in her non-fiction books, she acknowledges this.
2. The whole deal with a whole bunch of people from this little town joining the Army works. The idea that they'd all be together in the same unit on the same deployment does not work, since they don't appear to be National Guard/Reserve, where you do get this.
3. The revelation that she broke a major rule because her friend was killed turned me off.
4. I did like the physical chemistry in the sexual scenes, it was well done.
5. There were one or two moments that really rung true, but overall I just couldn't buy the story

All I Want For Christmas Is You A Coming Home Novella Jessica Scott 9781942102014 Books Reviews
This was my first Homefront Novel; however, it was not my first Jessica Scott Novel.
This book was beautifully written as it was heart wrenching. I think this book is a wonderful example of what some go through when they come back from War. I don’t think one can fathom losing their life long best friend while at war. What that does to you when you make it through and must face their loved ones.
There were so many parts of this book even though it was just 100 pages that I wanted to cry. Patrick potentially losing the daughter that he has raised for the last eight years. Fighting so hard for the women that he loves. Sam feeling so lost that was she was still here.
Jessica Scott writes so beautifully that you feel what these characters are going through.
The only thing I didn’t like about this book is that it was such a short read. Yes, it was a novella but this read more like a very short story. Still worth the price for an outstanding story.
The armed forces of American men and women have one of the toughest jobs there is. They leave their wives, husbands and children for possibly years at a time to fight in hostile conditions or sometimes in foreign cities a long way from home. Many of these soldiers do not make it back and many have seen so much death that it affects their stateside lives. This is a story of two career army officers Patrick and Sam. Sam has returned from her last deployment heartsick at the loss of her best friend Mel. Sam has taken her daughter Natalie to Maine to be with her mother, feeling so lost she can not cope with daily life anymore. Patrick is a career solider also and knows that something is very wrong with Sam, but he doesn't know how to stop her from leaving. Patrick sits drinking glass after glass one night and the phone rings with 8 yr old Natalie calling him to please come and help her. PTSD is very real and it happens to soldiers, police officers, firefighters, EMS personnel, people abused......The lists of people who can be affected by PTSD goes on and on. Professional Counseling and understanding that each person can react differently to traumatic situations is the key to helping those who suffer.
This is a story set at Christmas of two soldiers returning from deployment. A couple for over 8 years but never married, Patrick and Samantha have major problems. Samantha takes her daughter, 8 year old Natalie to Maine to try to sort out her life. Natalie calls Patrick, the only dad she's ever known because she is scared. They work out their problems with the help of a Christmas miracle and a little girl who knows what she wants. This is part of the Coming Home series and can be read as a stand alone. Ms. Scott paints a very realistic picture of military life and problems. I received a copy of this ARC in exchange for a fair and honest review.
This novella was previously released as "All I Want for Christmas Is You." I loved this story, which is about what Captain Samantha Egan faces upon her return from the battlefields of Iraq. She and her significant other, Major Patrick MacLean, have each served on tours. They each have their own scars, and things they're withholding from the other. This last time, he was left behind to take care of Sam's daughter, the child he sees as his own . But upon arriving home, Sam leaves him, taking the child with her, because of the demons she also brought home with her.
Patrick loves them both, but turns to the bottle for salvation before taking a phone call from the child, telling him she's scared, that something's wrong with Mommy, and that she wants to come home. This is the story of his fight to bring Samantha back from the brink of depression, to bring her and their child back together as a family. It's a difficult, touching battle, full of emotion. The compassion and understanding involved are touching.
This story flipped things on end for me, because we typically hear stories about the guy going off to war. But this story makes the "guy" feel more like the women who are typically left back home, trying to hold everything together for long periods of time. The author is a veteran writing from the heart and soul of one who knows the ins and outs of wartime engagements, the military, how it feels to serve, and come back with less than you left.
This story touched my heart and made me feel closer to what veterans must certainly face while "over there," as well as when they return home.
I had previously read one of the author's non-fiction books, and I wanted to like this one.
It just didn't work for me, however. I am a military member, and I was hoping that this would be a romance novel I could connect with. Plus, looking at the problems that mothers have when they come home from deployment is an interest of mine.
