Bewitching Season Leland Sisters Book 1 Marissa Doyle Books
Upon my second reading of this book I found myself bored & unable to keep my eyes open It keep hinting that things would get interesting only to stop & go into lengthy discourse regarding clothes, travel & deportment. It only started to get interesting at chapter 8, which by then I had stopped reading 3/4 of the way through Chapter 7 & didn't even look at it again until a week later. I thought that the pace would pick up, but it started lagging again. This was how the rest of the book went : plot movement that almost immediately slowed to a crawl only to build up slowly to another peak of movement. It was only near the end that it held a moderate pace throughout a chapter.
This is Jane Austen-ish clean story but most of it was dull & slow going.

Bewitching Season Leland Sisters Book 1 Marissa Doyle Books Reviews
Bewitching Season (Leland Sisters) by Marissa Doyle follows the story of Penelope and Persephone Leland, twin witches, in 1837 London. Persephone would rather spend her time studying magic instead of searching for a husband, unlike her sister Penelope. But when their governess in magic is kidnapped in a plot to control the soon to be Queen, Persy and Penelope must overcome shady royal spinsters and Irish wizards.
I thought this story was a cute story. Not the best, but it was cute in the romance and historical part. I'm all up for anything that takes place in history, even more Victorian England, which drew me to this story to begin with.
Persephone was a bit annoying and clichéd of a character. You know, the good, study, shy, don't want to be near guys type of girl. The one that rather read books than be in a ball. I'm almost surprised that she didn't have glasses. \ I would have liked some different characteristics than the usual, but whatever.
If you're expecting something deep or new or mind blowing, this isn't it. It's not original too much, it has no depth to it, it's clichéd and expected, but it's a cutesy book. Predictable but cute. I guess it's one of those beach reads more so than anything.
In the England of 1837, the daughters of viscounts are expected to make their debut in society, appear at exclusive balls and parties during the London Season and attract the attention of eligible bachelors. Ideally, a summer wedding will follow close on the heels of the debut Season. Twins Persephone and Penelope Leland are not exactly typical of visconts' daughters - they're witches and have been secretly studying magic with their governess Ally - but, as they are about to turn eighteen, they are nevertheless getting ready for their first Season.
For Persephone, nothing could be more daunting than making her debut into Society. Halting spells and other tricky bits of magic are a breeze for her but the prospect of dancing at balls and making polite conversation with appropriate men is overwhelmingly terrifying for the shy, studious Persy. Even the promise of spending more time with the Leland's neighbor Lochinvar, Lord Seton, whom Persy secretly loves, does not make the looming Season any less frightening for her.
Just before the girls arrive in London, their beloved Ally vanishes. Persy, Pen and their brother Charles are determined to uncover the facts behind her disappearance. Not even an unsettling run-in with a mysterious Irish man can divert Persy from her quest to find Ally.
Before the Season is over, Persy will need all of her wits AND her magical talent to find Ally and uncover a vicious plot against young Princess Victoria. At the same time, keeping her head above the treacherous waters of Society and dealing with the results of an ill-advised love spell will alse require Persy's attention.
Bewitching Season, the first of two novels featuring the Leland sisters, is a satisfying historical mystery skillfully interwoven with elements of romance and fantasy. Ms. Doyle does an excellent job of bringing mid 19th Century London to life and then adding her own elements in the form of magic and political intrigue. Persy, with her dreadful shyness and her overpowering crush on Lochinvar, makes a particularly likable heroine, and one with whom most young women can identify.
I love historical fiction. I love the manners, the balls, the dresses, the courtesy... it all feels so romantic (No, don't touch me with reality)... fueled by the likes of Jane Austen's works.
I wanted to love Bewitching Season. I've been waiting to read this and when I finally bought it and read it...
I love the manners, the balls, the dresses and the courtesy well enough but they couldn't detract for the utter silliness of one Persephone Leland. She may be a bluestocking but that didn't help her at all from being over-anxious, over-thinking things and at times pretty stupid. I rather think that Penelope was the more level-headed of the two even if she was, uhm, more inclined towards the balls and meeting eligible men. But I was reading the book from Persy's point of view so I couldn't say much of Penelope. I still say she's more level-headed. Both were impulsive. I like Charles though.
The main conflict of the story was supposed to be the search for their missing, beloved governess who had taught them magic for ten years. Supposed to. But at times it was swept aside by the demands of the aristocratic society and the Season (or the marriage market), that they quite sometimes forget about Ally.
Ah, the romance. We can't forget about romance. Well, I think this is where I could attribute the silliness of Persy's actions. Doing a love spell, wanting but not wanting Lochinvar to love her, her belief that he must hate witches based on a gossip... My mind is arguing with itself and presenting sound arguments for and against both sides like she's a 17-year old girl who believed that the object of her affections might never love her. *sigh*I knew that but that didn't stop me from snorting and rolling my eyes. Remember, kids, communication is the key not hiding behind fans.
I don't know if I would read Betraying Season in the next few days though I'd love to know Pen's story. I might take a break and go on a dystopian spree.
Upon my second reading of this book I found myself bored & unable to keep my eyes open It keep hinting that things would get interesting only to stop & go into lengthy discourse regarding clothes, travel & deportment.
